Fountain allows listeners to support podcasters with Bitcoin via the Bitcoin Lightning Network. You can either stream Bitcoin to them per minute or send a "Boost" at any point in the podcast when you hear something you like.
If you love podcasts and you own some Bitcoin, that probably sounds pretty awesome. But how do you get started? Isn't Bitcoin complicated enough?
Here is a simple guide on how to top up your Fountain Wallet with Bitcoin so that you can start tipping podcasters for their content.
There are three steps to this process:
- Step 1: Create a Lightning Wallet
- Step 2: Add Bitcoin to your Lightning Wallet
- Step 3: Send some Sats to your Fountain Wallet
If you're new to some of this terminology you probably have a few questions already, so let's try and get those out of the way first.
What is the Bitcoin Lightning Network?
Named because of its speed, Bitcoin Lightning Network is a second layer on top of the Bitcoin blockchain which enables private payment channels between anyone in the world.
What is a Lightning Wallet?
Your Bitcoin wallet (e.g. Coinbase or Binance) is on-chain, meaning its good for holding long term but sending might take a few mins and cost a few cents. A lightning wallet is off-chain, meaning you can send and receive almost instantly for almost no cost but you might not want to hold there long term.
What are Sats?
Bitcoins can be split into smaller units to make it easier to quantify smaller transactions on the Lightning Network. Satoshis (also known as Sats) are the smallest unit of a Bitcoin, equivalent to 100 millionth of a Bitcoin.
Now that we have covered off some of the fundamentals, let's get into it!
Step 1: Create a Lighting Wallet
First you'll need a Bitcoin wallet that lets you receive, hold, and spend Bitcoin on-chain and via the Lightning Network. For the quickest and most simple mobile experience, we recommend Blue Wallet as it has a really clean interface and you can buy Bitcoin within the app.
We will continue to reference BlueWallet for the purpose of this tutorial, but there are other Lightning Wallets available which work in a very similar way.
Step 2: Add Bitcoin to your Lightning Wallet
If you have Bitcoin already
Open your Lightning Wallet in BlueWallet and press "Manage Funds" then "Refill with External Wallet". This will generate a Bitcoin address that you can copy to your clipboard.
Open up your Bitcoin wallet and press "Send" to transfer your Bitcoin to BlueWallet. Set the amount, copy the address to the recipient field then verify the payment and send! It may take about 30 minutes for the transaction to be confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain.
If you don't have any Bitcoin
Good news - you can buy Bitcoin in BlueWallet. With your Lightning Wallet in BlueWallet open, press "Manage Funds" then "Refill with Bank Card". Select the amount and enter your email. You will be sent a code to verify your MoonPay account. Once that is done, just enter your details to complete the purchase.
Step 3: Send some Sats to your Fountain Wallet
If you haven't already, download the Fountain app on iOS or Android now
Open Fountain and go to your Wallet in the main menu. Press "Add Funds" and choose the number of Sats you wish to transfer. This will generate the invoice address.
Copy the invoice address into BlueWallet. Confirm everything is correct and proceed with the payment. Now you have funds in your Fountain wallet!
You might have noticed the "Boost" button on the podcast player. When you hit "Boost" on a lightning-enabled podcast, you can set the number of Sats per minute or send a one-off Boost (you can send a message with it too!)
You can then find a record of your transactions by opening your Fountain wallet, as well as top up again when you need to by following the same steps above.
